Laser Hair Removal and PCOS: What Nobody Tells You Before You Start

|nicole mazza

If you have PCOS and you have been thinking about laser hair removal, this post is for you. As someone with PCOS myself and a licensed esthetician who offers laser hair removal in Brooklyn, I want to give you the honest information that most places leave out when you are trying to decide if this treatment is right for you.

Why PCOS makes hair growth different

PCOS raises androgen levels in the body, which are the hormones responsible for stimulating hair follicles. This is why so many people with PCOS experience excess hair growth on the face, chin, neck, stomach, and inner thighs. It is not a hygiene issue, it is not something you caused, and it is one of the most common and least talked about symptoms of the condition.

The important thing to understand is that because the hair growth is driven by hormones that are still active in your body, laser hair removal works differently for PCOS clients than it does for someone without a hormonal condition. It absolutely still works, but going in with realistic expectations makes the whole process so much better.

What laser hair removal actually does

Laser hair removal targets the pigment in the hair follicle and uses heat to damage the follicle so it can no longer produce hair. It is most effective on hair that is actively in the growth phase, which is why multiple sessions are needed. Hair grows in cycles, and not all follicles are in the same phase at the same time.

For most people without hormonal conditions, six to eight sessions spaced four to six weeks apart produces significant permanent reduction. For PCOS clients the process is similar but there are a few important differences.

What to expect as a PCOS client

You may need more sessions than average. Because androgens continue stimulating new follicles, some clients with PCOS find they need additional maintenance sessions beyond the standard six to eight. This does not mean the treatment is not working. It means your hormones are still in the picture and we account for that.

Results can be affected by hormonal fluctuations. If your PCOS is not well managed or if you are going through a hormonal shift, you may notice some regrowth in areas that were previously cleared. Keeping up with your endocrinologist or doctor while doing laser treatments gives you the best results.

Fine or light hairs respond more slowly. Laser targets pigment, so very fine vellus hairs or lighter hairs take longer to respond than coarser darker ones. This is true for everyone but can be more of a factor with PCOS related facial hair which is sometimes finer in texture.

Hormonal changes like starting or stopping birth control, pregnancy, or changes in medication can affect your results. We always do a full consultation before starting and factor your health history into your treatment plan.

The areas I treat most often for PCOS clients

Upper lip, chin, and full face are the most common requests from my PCOS clients. These are also the areas that tend to be most emotionally charged for people, and I want you to know that there is zero judgment in my treatment room. I have been there personally and I understand how much this can affect your confidence.

I also offer underarms, arms, legs, and back for clients who want more comprehensive hair removal.

Is it painful?

Most clients describe the sensation as a quick snap or warmth. It is very tolerable and sessions are relatively fast depending on the area being treated. I always make sure my clients are comfortable throughout.

How to prepare for your first session

Shave the area 24 hours before your appointment but do not wax or thread in the weeks leading up to it. The hair follicle needs to be intact for the laser to target it. Avoid sun exposure on the area for at least two weeks before and after treatment, and come in with clean skin free of lotions or deodorant on the area being treated.

The bottom line

Laser hair removal is absolutely an option for people with PCOS and it can be genuinely life changing. The key is working with someone who understands your condition, sets realistic expectations, and builds a treatment plan around your specific needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

If you are in the Brooklyn area and want to talk through whether laser is right for you, I offer consultations and would love to help you figure out the best path forward for your skin and your confidence.
