Skincare Routine Order: How (and Why) to Apply Your Products the Right Way
One of the most common questions we get in the studio isn't "what should I use," it's "what order do I use it in." The order you apply your products actually changes how well they work. Get it right, and every step does its job. Get it wrong, and you could be blocking your best ingredients before they ever reach your skin. Here's how we break it down for our clients.
Apply From Thinnest to Thickest
The general rule of thumb is simple: layer your products from the lightest consistency to the heaviest. Thinner formulas need to reach the skin first, and heavier products sitting on top can block them if the order is reversed. A typical routine looks like this:
- Cleanser — removes buildup and preps the skin
- Toner — rebalances and preps skin for absorption
- Serum — delivers concentrated active ingredients
- Spot treatment — targets specific areas of concern
- Moisturizer — locks everything in and reinforces the barrier
- Sunscreen — always last, and always in the morning
Sunscreen goes on last, on top of everything, since it needs to sit undisturbed on the surface to protect you all day.
Do You Actually Need to Wash Your Face in the Morning?
Yes, even if you cleansed the night before. While you sleep, your skin continues producing oil and sweat, and your pillowcase adds its own residue on top. A quick morning wash or rinse clears that off so your daytime products, especially serums and sunscreen, can actually absorb instead of sitting on top of overnight buildup. This doesn't need to be a full double cleanse. A gentle, low-pH cleanser is all your barrier needs to start the day clean without stripping it.
You Don't Need a 20-Step Routine
There's a lot of pressure online to have a shelf full of products and a routine with a dozen steps. In reality, a long routine is harder to stick to and can work against your skin. More steps mean more room for irritation, more chances of layering conflicting actives, and more likely you'll skip it altogether on a busy day. A simple, consistent routine will always outperform a complicated one you can't keep up with. Start with the essentials, and build from there only if your skin actually needs it.
Start With the Essentials
If you're building or simplifying your routine, these three products are non-negotiable:
- Cleanser — keeps your barrier clean without stripping it
- Moisturizer — supports and maintains your skin barrier
- Sunscreen — protects against the number one cause of premature aging
That's it. That's a complete routine. Everything else is optional support, not a requirement.
Where Serums and Toners Fit In
Once your essentials are in place, serums and toners are where you target specific concerns, whether that's dark spots, breakouts, dullness, or texture. These are the products you rotate or adjust as your skin's needs change season to season.
One thing we always emphasize: hydration needs a place in your routine no matter what actives you're using. This matters even more if you're using anything that can be drying, like exfoliating acids or spot treatments. A hydrating toner or serum keeps your skin balanced so actives can do their job without compromising your barrier.
A good routine isn't about how many products you own, it's about using the right ones, in the right order, consistently. If you're not sure where to start, come in for a consultation and we'll build a routine specifically for your skin.
