Why Your Skin is Still Dry and Dull in March and How to Fix It

|nicole mazza

It is March. The worst of winter is technically behind us. So why does your skin still look tired, flat, and dry? You are drinking water. You are moisturizing. And yet your skin just will not bounce back. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone and you are not doing anything wrong.

March is honestly one of the busiest months in my treatment room for clients coming in with exactly this complaint. Here is what is actually going on.

What winter really does to your skin

Winter is genuinely hard on your skin barrier. Months of cold air outside and dry heated air indoors slowly deplete the natural moisture factors that keep your barrier intact and your skin looking healthy. By the time March arrives, most people's skin barriers are compromised even if they have no diagnosed skin condition and have been consistent with their routine.

A damaged barrier means your skin cannot hold onto moisture properly, even if you are applying moisturizer every single day. It also means your skin is more reactive, more prone to dullness, and slower to renew itself. That grey flat look in the mirror? That is your barrier asking for help.

Why it sometimes gets worse before it gets better

Here is the frustrating part. In early spring, as humidity starts returning to the air, your skin goes through a recalibration period. It is adjusting to the environmental shift, which can temporarily make dullness, dry patches, and uneven texture feel worse before they improve. This is completely normal. It is also exactly why your routine needs to support your barrier right now rather than challenge it.

I always tell my clients to think of the skin barrier like a brick wall. Winter knocks out a few bricks. The spring transition shakes the whole wall. Your job in March is to start putting the bricks back, and that takes the right ingredients, not just more product layered on top.

The fix: hydration first, then barrier repair

Revive Me Hydrating and Calming Toning Mist for sensitive skin by Skin and Soul

After cleansing, your first move should be adding hydration back before anything else. A hydrating toner is not just a nice extra step. It is what makes everything you apply after it actually work. The Revive Me Hydrating and Calming Toning Mist is my go-to here. I spray it on right after cleansing while my skin is still slightly damp, and it preps my skin to absorb my serum instead of just sitting on top of it. It also calms any reactivity immediately, which sensitive skin really needs right now.

Then follow with something that actually repairs the barrier rather than just sitting on top of it. The Bounce Back Serum was built around this. It contains ingredients that mimic your skin's natural lipids and support the proteins that keep your skin looking plump and alive. Within a few weeks of consistent use most of my clients notice their skin looks more awake, more even, and significantly less reactive.

What to avoid right now

  • Heavy exfoliation. Your barrier is already compromised and acids or scrubs will make things worse
  • Trying multiple new products at once. You will never know what is helping or hurting
  • Skipping moisturizer because you feel oily. It always backfires
  • Hot water when cleansing. It strips what little moisture your barrier has left

Commit to a barrier-first routine and give it two to three weeks. The dullness will start to lift. I promise.
